Addicted to smartphones or smartphone?

Hi people,

Can anyone help me confirm which one is the most correct? Or are they both acceptable?

People are addicted to smartphone nowadays. (Here I meant to say "smartphone " in general)
People are addicted to smartphones nowadays.(Here I meant to say "their smartphones" )

    I think we would only use the plural in both sentences.

    We don't use 'smartphone' in a general way like that.
