Does anybody have some advice for a beginner of the German language? As in where should I start? I know VERY little German, however I would love to learn. Thanks for the help!
Danke,

    Hi Evan,

the most important recommendation I give to the students of German is: Learn the grammar properly and thoroughly from the very beginning.

It really pays. Catching up later is extremely annoying and painful, in my opinion much more than in other languages because of the complexity of the German grammar. I actually know many foreigners who easily communicate in German and are understood despite the huge amount of mistakes they make. None of them, however, was and is able to do away with the twisted grammar because they were not careful enough in their first 20 lessons (things like "mit + Dativ", "alle guten Freunde", "einige gute Freunde" etc.).

    Hi Evan,

The best proof of Jana's recommendation is her perfect German. Just try to keep it in mind when 'suffering' your first grammar lessons.

Here are a few links which might be quite helpful to find your individual outset to learn German. They provide online courses as well as recommendations for educational material.

In addition to that I'm sure you'll find help in this forum as well.

Evan, learn just a little and everyone in this forum will start spoiling you like this;)

    I can offer a link, too: german.about.com
Plenty of useful material, updated on a regular basis.
