Chaucer not only has the Miller[*from Canterbury Tales] tell his shocking tale but affects surprise that the majority enjoyed it: "for the moore part they[*tellers-audience in Tales] and longhe and pleyed."

Does "affects surprise that" mean "(1)has an effect on (2)the surprise of the shocking tale (3)so that...?" (Is my text too short to answer?)
Are the three parts of my rephrased sentence right? I don't think they are. :(
