afford/ decide/ expect/ hope to see it lost

Dear teachers,

Could you take a look at the following sentence (quoted from my practice test)

"Whether we like it or not, there are a number of mothers who just have to work. There are those who have invested such a big part of their lives in establishing a career that they cannot __________ to see it lost."
A. afford
B. decide
C. expect
D. hope

I chose B but the answer is A.

Could you tell me which one is better?

  • Choice A is apt he better option in this scenario. The word decide just means they are choosing it, whereas afford means that they have no choice and that not working would have bad consequences. However, either is correct.
