after they're lost

I'm struggling with this one.

I'm still on my documentary about american education system.

A "charter school" founder speaks :

Almost everybody who comes in to do school, they come in and try to save kids after they're lost.

Then the documentary explains this educator had to rethink the way a school worked in a troubled neighborhood and how teachers changed their methods to teach to those kids.

Who is lost, here ? The kids (I guess) or the teachers ? Would you say I'm right if I translate this sentence like this :

Presque tous les profs qui viennent faire classe ici, viennent pour sauver des enfants qui sont déjà perdus.
