after whom was he named?

I´m not sure if this question sounds natural:

After whom was he named?
- From his great grandfather.

I think this sounds more natural:

He was named after whom?

    Hi epistolario

What I'd say is actually Who was he named after?

I believe that in AmE that would be Who was he named for?

Many native speakers tend to avoid "whom", especially in everyday speech.

    - Who was he named after?
    - His great grandfather./He was named after his great grandfather.
