Good afternoon, everyone.

The Republican Party nominated Benjamin Harrison as their candidate to run against Grover Cleveland in the 1888 presidential election...
Although Cleveland won the popular vote, Harrison won the Electoral College. In 1889, he followed his grandfather’s footsteps all the way to the White House.

What does "all the way" mean in this context?

  • The idea is you can't go farther than the White House as a politician in the U.S. Being president is the top political job. "All" indicates this journey is complete. He reached the highest job just like his grandfather did. He couldn't go any farther in politics because nowhere farther existed.
