aller + present participle

Hey,

I have to translate the following:

"A nos pieds allait se perdant un étrange parterre..." (and then it continues)

I was just wondering how best to render that in English; do I want to say that it was actually [in the process of] disappearing, or that it was beginning to disappear, or that it was going to disappear?

    I think none of the above: the flowerbed seems to disappear, blurring in the distance, meaning it's vast, when they look at their feet they see flowers, and the further they look, the more blurred it goes: flowers, then colours, then...
