The quotation comes from Charlotte Brontë – Jane Eyre (Chap. 26) | Genius

Quotation: At the churchyard wicket he stopped: he discovered I was quite out of breath. “Am I cruel in my love?” he said. “Delay an instant: lean on me, Jane.”

Context: Jane was driven by Mr. R to church for the wedding ceremony. She “was hurried along by a stride” her “could hardly follow.”

Hi everyone! I don’t quite understand “Am I cruel [in] my love?” here. The word “in” puzzles me. I read it as “am I cruel (=disposed to inflict pain or suffering) in (= to) my love (= the girl I loved)”. Is it correct?
