american expression "the old and the new"

Hello all,
the sentence : you have probably got the "old and the new" and all of that stuff.
The context is a girl is getting married we are at the wedding ceremony one of the sister will offer the ring of their grandmother.
I don't get the expression if you have an idea thanks.

It is a rhyme listing the items a bride should carry on her wedding day to ensure good fortune:

Something old, something new.
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
