John speaks to Fanny after he made to his father Mr Dashwood for distributing money to stepmother, his mother and sisters:

John: They will have 500 a year amongst them as it is.
Fanny: And what on earth could four women want for more than that?

Is the word "amongst them" needed?

  • Yes, 'amongst them' is needed, but note that it's a phrase – not a word.

Jeff, Sense and Sensibility, the novel by Jane Austin, was written in 1811. In future questions about it, please quote that date rather than the date of any subsequent screen versions of the story.
