amplify effects

I think you could amplify a signal, but could you amplify effects? I want to express the idea that the effects the pharmaceuticals claimed was larger than the actual effects. What kind of verbs could I use, whitewash? Aside from that, any other problem with this sentence?

Those companies found arbitrarily amplifying drug effects to mislead consumers will have their products pulled from sale until such time they have dispelled the negative influence.
  • I don't believe "amplify" can be used that way, and in any case, "amplify" refers to a real increase, not a fictitious claim. You could say "exaggerating" or "making false claims about".
