Public opinion could be easily aroused to demand that Venezuela follow the Argentine example. Yesterday’s evening paper had even demanded this in an 8-column headline. He mentioned this to describe how Venezuela public opinion is very sensitive.

What is an 8-column headline?

It is a headline which runs the entire width of a newspaper's page, conventionally printed eight columns wide. (Also called a banner headline.) The headline below that begins "Armistice signed..." is an 8-column headline. Below it are several one-column and 2-column headlines.

Most American newspapers, including the New York Times, switched to a six-column format many years ago. So I suppose you'd have to modify that sentence today.
