an appreciation for the fact

Hello everyone,

From the book Thank You for Being Late by Thomas Friedman.

In and between the lines of those letters, there is not only an affection for this place we all called home but also an appreciation for the fact that the community that emerged from this mix of cultures didn’t happen by accident—we were blessed with extraordinary local and state leaders, school principals, and parents, who time and again made decisions about the kind of inclusive place they wanted to build and who fought for those values against, at times, entrenched opposition.

Does appreciation in "an appreciation for the fact" mean understanding?

Thank you.
