SEOUL, Korea, Republic Of -- North Korea is moving ahead with plans to close its nuclear test site next week, South Korea's military said Tuesday, an ___(1)___ backed by U.S. researchers who say satellite images show the North has begun dismantling facilities at the site.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry announced Saturday that it will dismantle the test site between May 23 and 25. To provide transparency, the ministry said journalists from South Korea, the United States, China, Russia and Britain will be invited to observe the destruction of tunnels and the removal of ___(2)___ and research facilities at the site.

Gap Filling (A) assessment (B) observation South Korean military says North Korea preparing nuke site closure

I chose (B) and (A), but the answers are (A) and (B).

1. Why can't "North Korea is moving ahead with plans to close its nuclear test site next week, South Korea's military said Tuesday" be an observation :confused:

assessment = appraisal, evaluation
observation = a statement about something you have noticed : a comment or remark

2. Why "observation and research facilities" but not "assessment and research facilities" :confused:

Are "observation facilities" designed for use in viewing something?
  • observation airplanes/helicopters
  • an observation deck/platform/post/tower
Thank you :)

    I would say that either A or B would fit in (1), BUT that only B is possible in sentence (2), therefore, it MUST be A in (1) and B in (2).

    the word 'assessment' doesn't really go with 'facilities': an 'assessment facility' is not a common collocation, whereas an 'observation facility' is.
