Is it correct to say "An evening sometime ago" or would you rephrase differently? Thanks.

Well, what is your context? How far back was this evening? Some time ago communicates that the event occured many years before you are speaking of it in your conversation. However, even if temporally correct, your sentence rings unnatural to my ears. I think the others are on the right trail using 'One evening, I...'. Remember that English is not very exact in temporal marking.
