an extra/additional wool blanket

In the winter I put an extra/additional wool blanket on my bed.

Do both extra and additional fit in the above and mean about the same to you? Thanks.

    Yes, they mean pretty much the same.

    'Additional' sounds unnatural here though. Extra is okay, but 'another' is probably the best fit.

    That (what sasho said) lines up pretty much with my AE ear also. But "extra" emphasizes that you're ADDING another blanket. It's just more of an emphasis, if you want emphasis.
