an extra year of schooling

Can somebody explain it for me, please?

"Students in these schools made learning gains of more than half an extra year of schooling in English, and two thirds of an extra year in maths - versus the government schools."

The gains they made in English in those schools were what they would have taken half a year (half an academic year) more to get in government schools.

Similarly, the progress they made in maths would have taken two-thirds of a year longer in government schools.
