How would it sound if I wrote it this way:
"For moral truth may have been penetrated and possessed in all these ways, and may escape us still."

    The word 'may' is what the writer omitted in the original for the sake of brevity.
    However, for the sake of the sense, if we put 'may' back, we should change the word order:

    "For moral truth may have been penetrated and possessed in all these ways, and may still escape us."

    This order better preserves the emphasis of the original meaning.
