In his memoirs "being geniuses together" Robert McAlmon talks about foreigners painters coming to Berlin and who are not all involved in painting. "Thelma, Lett, and Cedric were about much together, and not one of them but preferred a cafe to painting in those days, as did all of us"
I understand that it means probably that the prefer go to the café thain painting, but I don't really understand the construction of "not one of them but"
