Hi again.

I tried to raise her up, and said, as gravely as I could, that I
thanked her, but my duty was imperative, and that I must go.
She then rose and dried her eyes, and… (Dracuala by Bram Stoker)

"That I thanked her" is in the past while "that I must go" is in the present. Why? Shouldn't it have to be "that I had to go"?
