and the like = formal/informal?

New Member
I need to use an expression like "and the like" in a formal context, and I prefer not to use 'etc'. Any suggestions? In any case, is "and the like" informal?

Using “and the like” is a little higher register than “etc.”
But it’s not too formal either.
I think you could use it in anything that was formal, too.

Other synonyms for etc.: [all a little more formal than etc.]
    and so on
    and so forth
    and such

et al. very formal—meaning: and/among others [used with people]

Maybe you could give us an example of how you want to use it?
