Anniversary of my birthday?

< Previous | Next >
I was reading Charles Dickens and there is this part that I didn't understand. "I PASS over all that happened at school, until the anniversary of my birthday came round in March." What does anniversary of my birthday mean??

Today, a birthday is a day that happens every year. In old-fashioned or formal language (for example in talking about the Prince of Wales), the birthday is the one day of birth, and it has an anniversary every year - but mostly we just call this the birthday.
