Why is there an s added to Österreich when the Anschluss is referring to Austria (singular) and not Austrias (plural)?

It’s in the genitive case: the annexation of Austria.

Anschluss von Österreich

Here the genitive case is easily to recognize because of the definite article "des". I guess the problem are proper names without article:

die Gründung Roms
