Apply a "stick"

Some teachers use a stick (normally made of wood) in the school to punish the students. (It's not very common, though.), what verb should be used for this?

Are these sentences correct?

"A teacher applies sticks on the students to punish them"
"A teacher sticks on the students to punish them
"A teacher hurt them with sticks"

Thanks. :)

In a school it was usually called a cane, and that was also used as a verb: the teacher caned the students. Outside of school, you would say that someone hits another person with a stick.
