'approach the problem in general rather than in small details

I know that this is really bad word choice, but I can't think of a better way to word this. Anyone with a suggestion?

The students are taught to approach the problem in general rather than in small details.

    That is certainly better than mine, anothersmith. I had originally thought of using

    The students are taught to approach the problem on a large scale rather than on a small scale.

    or something along that line.
