Are contractions acceptable in formal writing?

AmEng., "lapsed" Korean
I'm curious about what is acceptable in formal writing in Korea, for example, in an essay for school or for a magazine. Can you make these contractions in writing? Would your teacher (or editor) mark it wrong?

다음 -> 담
마음 -> 맘
가을 -> 갈
사나흘 -> 사날
마을 -> 말

    I think all of them are unacceptable for writing.
    You could say in speaking 담 and 맘, but the rest of them, I've never heard before.
