To argue sth, as in assert that, maintain that, to put forth the position that, etc. can also be translated as defender que, right?

Here is a passage from a podcast called News in Slow Spanish, Episode #352:

El Departamento de Justicia considera que la conducta de Google es ilícita y exige que la compañía rediseñe la estrategia de su buscador para garantizar unas condiciones de competencia justa.
Google defiende que los usuarios no utilizan su motor de búsqueda porque estén obligados a hacerlo, sino porque es mejor.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your message. I assume you originally sent this as a report about the English to Spanish dictionary, and they've forwarded it to me at the English base, because they don't think the sense exists on the English side. However, I think this is the entry 'argue that' with the sense 'with clause: assert, maintain'.

@n.ares, is it possible to translate that sense with defender que ? I notice that you don't seem to have a sense of defender followed by a clause in the Spanish base either (at least, I can't see one in the esen dictionary - only defender with a direct object).

Hi. I think that Malbecblend is right: in this context, defender que works perfectly in Spanish. I've added defender que to the translations proposed under the sense "with clause: assert, maintain".

I notice that you don't seem to have a sense of defender followed by a clause in the Spanish base either (at least, I can't see one in the esen dictionary - only defender with a direct object).
I don't think that we should have a separate sense with que in the EsBase because this usage is already covered by the sense "idea: sostener" (as can be seen in the example sentence, this can be used without que too). In these specific cases, I prefer adding another example sentence under the same sense with a clause introduced by que because this is also a transitive usage. I've done that too and this sentence should be visible on the website once the bilingual dictionaries are updated.

    Thanks! :)
