art by design

hello everyone!

I have to translate this expression and am not really sure how.

The sentence is: "
The tradition of geometric abstraction is one that has been criticized as “art by design”".

My go: la tradition de l'abstraction géométrique a été critiquée, étant considérée comme de l'art par conception.
But I know it's not proper

Could someone give me a hand with that?
Many thanks in advance!

TLFi gives as one of the meanings of "dessin" "2. Figure(s) ornementale(s) servant à décorer un objet et qui présuppose(nt) généralement un modèle exécuté à la main au moyen d'un dessin." The examples it gives, such as "Les marqueteries à larges dessins géométriques (VIAUX, Meuble Fr., 1962, p. 106)." seem to have the sense which your quote uses pejoratively. So, "..de l'art par dessin"?
