Hello, what is the meaning of "as he was out" in the sentence below? Does it mean the soldier was out of gasoline or he was not conscious? Thank you for your help.

"A drunken G.I. was standing with a pistol in his hand, two dead Germans at his feet. He had stopped them in their vehicle and demanded gasoline, as he was out."
