as if

Hi there,

( I often chose to do the wrong thing and feel bad about it rather than to do the right thing, if the wrong thing was what I wanted.)
From The End of The Story By Lydia Davis p. 89

I can't figure out what (if ) means here, does it mean like (as if )?
Thanks in advance.

I think you could rewrite it as follows:

"If I had a choice, and what I wanted was the wrong thing to do, then I would still choose to do it and feel bad about it rather than do the right thing."
