Questions:
The sentence is totally fine with me, but I'm wondering if it also works to add an "as" at the sentence-end, considering the pattern of "portray X as Y":
(2). Are Japanese toddlers as independent as Netflix’s Old Enough portrays them [as]?

Thank you, Grassy. I kind of agree with you, but I'd also like to see how other native speakers look at the "as".

Grassy is right. The terminal as does not belong there. It's superfluous and the issue is not controversial.
