Hello,

I would like to know whether or not the words 'As' in bold in (1) and (2) are the same adverbs. If they are, the underlined constructions are also clauses, aren't they? I hope you can kindly explain the differences between them, for example, the underlined words in (1) is a clause uses direct speech. Here are the underlined constructions:

(1). As my friend Jack told me, " Sinatra's style may.. to the fullest." (17)
( About.com, http://esl.about.com/library/weekly/aa110200a.htm)

(2). As Kenneth Morgan writes:
The truth was perhaps that Btitain ...changed all that fundamentally.
( Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 7 th Edition)

I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

With best wishes.
