I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten--a thrill of returning thought: and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.
What does "as of" mean? Is my following guess right?
I felt a misty consciousness, like the consciousness of something forgotten"

Yes. As of = like. (approximately)

But "as of" sounds much better here. The style seems excellent to me. :)
