    I do not think that it is the finest example of word usage and syntax;

    as the result
    remained too close to call. = at the same time the result remained too close to call by them, anyone else, and me.

    e.g. "I saw him as I left the building"

    I have read something about the current election in Greece and found a clue. Correct me if I am not right understanding why remained is used.
    According to a Greek law, within 14 days of the election , there should be no polls conducted to project its outcome. So the result remained too close to call refers to the last time a poll was conducted two weeks ago and at that time the result was too close to call.

    Am I right?
