    How would you translate the sentence in bold ?

    "[...] our footsteps made a small crackling sound as they crushed the thin layer of ice upon the paving stones." Iris Murdoch

    My try:

    Nos pas faisaient un petit (son de crépitement / crépitant) comme ils brisaient la fine couche de glace sur les pavés.

    "A la mesure de nos pas, la fine couche de glace qui recouvrait les pavés se brisait en de petits craquements"
