as though/as if + present tense?

Is it correct to use the present tense after as though/ as if,or do I necessarily have to use the past tense or the subjunctive? In case that's acceptable, do you think it is appropriate for a slightly formal written language?

By putting it like that you might sound as though you are trying to promote their cause.

My inclination would be to use the word 'were'.

The indicative would be correct but it suggests that the information could possibly be true. "As though you are trying" means you probably are trying to promote their cause. "Were" suggests you are not.
