Can we use both expressions interchangeably?

1. I have visited a lot of countries so far.
2. I have visited a lot of countries as yet.

As a rule of thumb, as yet can replace so far in negative sentences or with only/few, for example.

I have not been to Afghanistan so far.
    I have not been
(able to) visit Afghanistan as yet.
As yet/So far I have only seen three cars outside his house.
As yet there have been very few cases of malaria in this village.
As yet:confused: there have been four robberies in this street.

Example 1 is correct. Example 2 is wrong.

If example 2 was changed to a negative then "as yet" would be correct:

2a. I have not visited a lot of countries as yet.

However this would be more natural without "as":

2b. I have not visited a lot of countries yet.
