Ascendency or influence? <-----Original thread title added to post by moderator (Florentia52)----->

Both words are translated into Russian the same. What's the difference?

How about you give us the sentences where you have met these and we can explore the difference with you.

As it stands they are not obviously synonymous, but I am sure they could be in certain contexts, like politics for example.

If you mean "control," then that's a good word to use. If you mean you believe yourself to be superior to the other person, yo need to use a different sentence.

Without substantial context, its difficult to think of a situation in which "ascendancy" would be idiomatic in your sentence. It's not a word we commonly use in speaking.
