ask a student if she has a project partner

Hi all,

A course I am taking has a project that requires students to work in groups of 3. The other day I spoke to a classmate to ask him if he had agreed with somebody to work together. But that way of asking didn't seem right to me. Could you please tell what's the best natural way to ask a classmate if he already has a partner?
The best I could think of is: "How many project partners do you have so far?" but I am not sure if the word "partner" is right for this context.
Thank you.

It might make a difference to know why you're asking ... just interested? or do you want to join his group? or general concern? Etc.?

That sounds good. Another is "Have you already found your two?" if "partners" will be understood because he knows what you're talking about.
