My understanding: Edward VIII was taken down by the government at the end of 1936 and then was forced to go exile abroad until his death in 1972(exactly a 35 years ) .So the sentence means he did not know at what time he accurately predicted his exile life was as long as 35 years.

    It is rather an awkward sentence. What is the thing he gave? Is it is agreement to abdicate, or some undertaking not to return to Britain?

    Whatever it is, he did not realise at the time that he would be exiled from Britain for thirty-five years.
