When asked to stay on phone line - hang on.
Any alternatives to thus expression? - maybe hold on, or stay on?

To me please hold is the most common especially if we do not know the person we are talking to. Other possibilities exist.

In BE "hang on" is a bit colloquial. If it's a business call, I'd expect the person to say something like "Can I put you on hold?" or "Please hold the line"
