asking your pardon

The quote is from Treasure Island, by R.L. Stevenson.

Silver tells the island to the Captain. What is the meaning there "asking your pardon"? He did not interrupt anything to ask for a pardon.

I did not understand.

Could you explain it for me?

"But the main—that's the big un, with the cloud on it—they usually calls the Spy-glass, by reason of a lookout they kept when they was in the anchorage cleaning, for it's there they cleaned their ships, sir, asking your pardon."
"I have a chart here," says Captain Smollett. "See if that's the place."

It seems to me that Silver is being extremely polite when speaking to the Captain. He's asking forgiveness for stating what a Captain must surely understand.
