Assist people in difficulty

    I had a job once that I couldn't quite translate in English.
    I was helping people in difficulty.
    How would you say it if you had to write it in short on your resume.
    I hope I gave you enough details about it.

    My job was auxiliary social life helping people who were ill or dependent on something.

    Sounds like a social worker to me (in AE).

    What did you actually do?
    Were you helping them in the sense of doing errands and tasks for them or helping them move around, and get dressed and so on?
    Or did you help them get help from other people, but telling them where they should go, helping them fill out forms, and so on?
