assistant groom

Hello

Can anybody explain to me the role of an assistant groom?
I came across this expression in the following multiple choice exercise. I know that the right answer is best man but I wonder what the role of the assistant groom is?

The bridegroom was handed the ring by the assistant groom/best man/godfather.

Thanks.

    Hi again Tigerduck,
As far as I'm aware an assistant groom is someone who works with horses, feeding them, cleaning them out and sometimes riding them if he/she is good enough. This, in the UK at any rate, is more often known as a 'lad' whether the person is male or female.
    hope that helps

    Hi Tigerduck,

My first reaction was that of 3pepples, that we were talking horse maintenance here.

But bridegrooms in England are handed the ring by their best man, not by the guy who brushes their horses. I suspect that assistant groom is an AE term for a best man.
