    Carnations are the official Mother's Day flower in America. They were Anna Jarvis's mother's favorite flower. Jarvis handed them out at a celebration for mothers in West Virginia, and the carnation caught on from there.


    Does "celebration" in the above refer to "festivity" or "applause?" Thanks.
