At the bedside

Hello everyone! I'm a Spanish student of translation and I'm now working on a medical project. The text is about a tracheostomy.

This is the parragraph:
"1 What is a tracheostomy?
A tracheostomy is an artificially-created opening in the front of the neck. It goes through the skin and allows direct access to the trachea (windpipe). Tracheostomies are inserted below the level of the vocal cords (voice-box). Tracheostomies can be inserted by senior critical care doctors at the bedside, or by surgeons in the operating theatre."

I would like to know what does "at the bedside" means in this context. I hope someone can help me! Thanks in advance!
