Would it be correct to say: "Yes, that icon is at the lower/upper left/right hand side of the screen" ?

Yes, that sounds fine. I think "on" would work just as well as "at".

I think that if you use upper or lower, and left or right, then you have to use corner.

To me "upper left-hand side" indicates a general quadrant while "upper left(-hand) corner" indicates a, well... corner.

Yes, I think JamesM is right with "corner" , I meant a general area: "at the lower left hand side of the screen" .

I have yet another related question:

Could I have said: "the icon is at the top right hand side of the screen" ?

rather than: "...at the upper right hand side of the screen" ?

Also, I am wondering whether "side" is optional in these kinds of phrases.

You can simply say at the top right/bottom left of the screen.
