"He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and Overlord of Britanny at various times during the same period."

I found the phrase "at various times during the same period" very confusing. I think "various times" and "same period" cannot be together. Would you explain it?

Yes they can.:) The period remains the same, it is the times which vary.
Can we think of period here, as the match (basketball match is four period) and times as match's periods i.e various times are sub-periods of the whole period?

    Thank you.
