attendees

Hi everybody,

I know there are a few threads on this word but I have found it in the following context (a company policy on gifts etc.). So, here it does not seem to have the usual meaning of 'participants to an event or a meeting':

As a general matter, Gifts, Travel and Hospitality should not be provided to close relatives or guests of recipients or attendees, or others with whom XXX does not have a direct relationship.

What do you think is the meaning of 'attendees' here?

Thank you in advance for your help.

People who were, are or will be attending whatever is being talked about. "Recipients" suggests an award ceremony, but it could be a conference or seminar or something like that. I expect that attendance is by invitation only.

It depends very much on context, and we have none of that here. Where did you find this sentence?
Actually, the sentence is contained in the Policy of a company on gifts, travels and hospitality. So, the company gives instructions on this topic to the employees. The theoretical recipients or attendees are all the people having a business relationship with the company. So, it could be outside a meeting...perhaps for Christmas ...

Why attendees? The suffix "-ee" means a person who suffers or undergoes an action: a divorcee is someone who has been divorced, a referee is someone who is referred to...

These people are attenders, or what we usually call guests.
